Foam Filled Frame

If you are considering vinyl windows as the best replacement window option for your house, you should be sure to know if you are getting a hollow frame or a foam filled frame. The foam filled frames will cost more than a hollow frame, but will offer better long term energy efficient performance in the window.

Double Strength Glass

Sheet glass having a thickness of between 0.118 in. (3.00 mm) and 0.113 in. (3.38 mm), as compared to single strength glass which in the US is approximately 3/32 in. (2.5 mm) thick.

Factory Nail Fin

A vinyl or metal flange integrated into (or attached to) the perimeter of a window frame for installation onto the rough opening's header, jack studs and rough sill. A continuous nailing fin may surround the frame as with an all-vinyl window or a nailing fin may be affixed to the head and side jambs as with a vinyl clad window frame.

Oriel Window

A double-hung window in which the lower sash is shorter than the upper sash.

Cottage Window

A double-hung window in which the upper sash is shorter than the lower sash.

Keepsafe Glass

A revolutionary new product for the windows and doors in your home. KeepSafe laminated glass is the ideal home protection solution. It helps provide added safety, sound reduction, UV protection, security, and many other important benefits. These features ensure KeepSafe glass offers performance unmatched by ordinary annealed or safety glass windows.

Saflex Glass

Saflex is Solutia's brand of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) used to make laminated glass. A layer of Saflex protective interlayer is bonded together between two panes of glass under heat and pressure. Once sealed together, the glass "sandwich" behaves as a single unit and looks like normal glass. Annealed, heat-strengthened or tempered glass can be used to produce laminated glass. Laminated glass may crack upon impact, but the glass fragments tend to adhere to the protective interlayer rather than falling free and potentially causing injury. Benefits of laminated glass include safety, security, sound control, solar energy performance, ultraviolet screening, and protection from hurricanes, earthquakes and bomb blasts.

U Value

The U-value is the amount of heat that is transferred through a material. (the lower the U-value, the better insulating quality).

Obscure Glass

Obscure glass offers privacy where window coverings are not desired, in areas such as bathrooms or for use in sidelights. Obscure glass provides a translucent, rather than transparent appearance.

Tinted Glass

Tinted glass works to reduce heat transfer by filtering out ultraviolet light and infrared radiation. Because tinting can also reduce the amount of light transmitted, it is reserved primarily for warm climates, or windows with a southern or western exposure. Tinted glass may also be combined with LoE2 for maximum energy efficiency. Silver Line offers Bronze, Green and Gray tinted glass options.
